Take measures to reduce your forklift damage

Forklifts are prone to taking a lot of damage in the warehouse – and causing a lot of damage themselves! Forklifts are heavy and powerful pieces of equipment, so it’s vital they are operated effectively.

Forklifts can cause damage in different ways. Loads can fall from a forklift, and the forks can puncture or crush products. Pallets get crushed and that’s before you consider the possible health and safety implications to workers. There’s a number of ways to prevent damage made by forklifts –

  • Invest in proper lighting, to allow operators to be able to see effectively when driving their forklift
  • Make sure your warehouse is well organised, with aisles clear for forklifts to move around safely
  • Inspect your pallets and remove any that have broken planks or missing nails
  • Provide proper forklift training for operators – via The Forklift Truck Training Centre!

Indoor v outdoor forklifts – Which is right for you?

We use forklifts for a variety of different tasks. As such, it’s vital that you purchase the right forklift for the job required. Indoor and outdoor forklifts perform a variety of different roles – so which one is right for you?

Indoor forklifts are often electric powered and perform well indoors because of their compact design and low emissions. They are usually quieter and can move in tighter spaces, saving space and performing well in sometimes crowded and busy warehouses.

Outdoor forklifts are quite a different type of machine altogether. They are more robust and designed to work in rough terrain more effectively. They usually can carry heavier loads and are usually run on petrol or diesel. They are certainly resilient and built to beat tough weather conditions!

Depending on the task you need to undertake you should think carefully about what sort of forklift to invest in, as well as ongoing costs; for example, outdoor forklifts are built to withstand adverse weather and outdoor conditions, but as such are likely to need more maintenance checks than those indoors. Start with the task at hand to establish which forklift works best for you.

How are forklifts improving for the modern warehouse?

There’s no denying why forklifts are a vital tool for our warehouses, and the good news is they are improving all the time. So what improvements can we expect to see in forklifts this year?

New forklift designs are saving time and getting easier to use. Palm steering systems, double pedal systems and dual joysticks are making forklift operators lives easier when it comes to driving up efficiency. You might also find adjustable and lower seating and other flexible options on new forklifts.

It’s all about space. Warehouses need space efficiency, that’s a given – and designers are working on developing forklifts that can stack more effectively and maximise space. With the improvement of technology comes the ability to streamline design of forklifts too, meaning trucks need less space for manoeuvring.

Electric is the future. The growing efficiency of electric forklift trucks means we’ll see far more electric vehicles in the future, rather than gas or petrol/diesel models. Electric forklifts are much more environmentally friendly meaning they meet the needs of growing warehouse sustainability.

Look after your forklift and drive up efficiency this Christmas!

Forklifts are the beating heart of any and every warehouse. And at Christmas, we rely on them more than ever to deliver thousands of parcels and packages worldwide. It’s vital we take good care of our forklifts carrying their precious load!

The holiday season means a surge in demand and activity – as such, think about how often you are checking and caring for your forklift, and whether or not and how often extra checks and maintenance stops are needed. Make sure this is factored into your forklift day.

Choose your forklift wisely. There are a wide range of forklift types that provide different services and are adaptable according to your needs. Do your research and buy the forklift that will be able to complete the tasks most relevant to your organisation this Christmas.

Need a seasonal boost? You can hire forklifts with different abilities for a short space of time, just whilst your Christmas demand is on the up. Hire the equipment you’ll need to meet Christmas demand, rather than making an expensive purchase.

Do you need to invest in all-terrain forklifts?

We all know how crucial it is to pick the right type of forklift according to both our needs and the environment we work in. If your environment includes both indoor and outdoor space and the ground is uneven in vesting in an all-terrain forklift could make all the difference. Here’s why.

All-terrain forklifts are designed to operate in rough or rugged environments, like construction sites. They have specialised tyres and are built in a way to carry heavy loads across challenging terrain. Most all-terrain forklifts have diesel engines, giving them the extra power they need to navigate rough surfaces.

They operate in 4 wheel drive which in turn reduces wear and tear on the truck and tyres. All-terrain trucks have a higher ground clearance to ensure thy can easily navigate uneven surfaces and are designed to carry heavier loads than other forklifts. Some can carry 100,000 pounds over rough surfaces.

For full forklift efficiency, it is vital you pick the right vehicle according to your needs. Do your research and consider carefully the sort of typical tasks required from your forklift. Whilst an all-terrain forklift comes top when it comes to power, it won’t have the precision required in some warehouses either.
