Short term or long term forklift rental – What’s right for you?

Given the changing needs of many warehouses, lots of organisations rent forklift trucks to provide more flexibility in the working environment. There are long term and short term rental options available when it comes to forklifts – but which option suits your needs the most?

Short term rental options provide the ultimate flexibility to your organisation. You also have more control over costs when it comes to forklifts, and the maintenance and repair needs of your truck are often the responsibility of the rental company, lowering costs for you. With short term rentals you can have access to newer models more quickly and you’ll have no concerns when it comes to depreciation of your forklift.

Longer term rental agreements provide you with more stability for sure. You’ll have access to the equipment over a longer period of time which can be more useful when planning workflows. You’re likely to pay lower monthly costs and have fewer administration needs when working long term with the same supplier. You’’ also be provided with full maintenance and support from your forklift provider.

Tackling stress for forklift operators

Forklift jobs are by no means easy jobs. Even with safety measures improving and equipment becoming more sophisticated working in a fast pace warehouse environment can be stressful. So what are the major challenges to forklift work, and how can you combat workplace stress?

What’s the temperature? Often forklift drivers are required to work in changing temperatures, whether it’s outside, inside or in freezer environments. This can be both physically and mentally stressful – make sure you’ve put the right safeguards in place so forklift operators don’t feel the effects of changing temperatures too harshly.

Looming deadlines. Forklift operators usually work in fast paced environments with strict deadlines, meaning there’s a temptation to rush and potentially cause accidents. Managing workload and deadlines effectively is vital to avoid deadline stress.

Training needs. Training can sometimes feel like an afterthought or another stress for forklift operators. By using The Forklift Truck Training Centre we remove all the stress out of training and make the process as easy as possible.

Should you choose a diesel forklift?

We all know how essential forklifts are to any warehouse; it’s also incredibly important to pick the right one for your needs. Diesel forklifts are one option available to organisations – but what are the pros and cons of diesel forklifts?

Diesel forklifts are incredibly reliable. They are generally more cost effective than gas or electric run forklifts; there’s no downtime for recharging and they are well designed to work in harsh conditions. They have a simpler engine design and therefore are more low maintenance than other models, and are well known for their long operating life.

However, diesel forklifts do have a problem with emissions – this can be a concern for warehouses using diesel forklifts indoors for team members. They can be incredibly noisy which can be a problem for safety and communication, and whilst they are low cost maintenance the initial cost to buy one is much higher than other gas or electric run forklifts.

Avoid your forklift tipping and rolling over – Our Top Tips

For even the most experienced forklift operator it’s easy to make a mistake and risk your forklift tipping over. Not only can accidents like this cause damage and cost money you can put yourself at risk of an injury too. Here’s what to remember when operating your forklift to make sure you stay safe.

Stop your forklift before you lift. Yes it’s a busy working environment but make sure you fully stop and apply brakes before you start lifting your load to ensure your forklift is well secured.

Consider your speed. If you’re carrying a heavier load make sure you adjust your speed accordingly to ensure you don’t make your forklift unstable. Going too fast could cause your forklift to tip.

Make sure everyone in the warehouse is aware of safety measures, including pedestrians. Pedestrians should keep away from forklifts at all times; consider your forklift driving routes carefully too.

Invest in training. Make sure your forklift operators are well trained and provide refresher training to make sure everyone is kept up to date with best practise at all times.
